Yesterday I joined a meeting in the Netherlands in which the mentimeter was used in a creative way. They had open questions to which we all wrote answers of varying length. Then some of the answers were discussed and elaborated on. The discussions were interesting and the level of participation was high. I must try this some time.

Personal or not
The issue of how personal to be on the web is a bit intriguing. Should we mix our personal lives into the professional writings? My own research into social media marketing shows that being personal generally leads to higher success. For me, however, a more acute problem is how to separate my professional lives. Apart from being a university professor, I run a company active in publishing and complementary health. It would be preferable to keep them very separate. But how to do that when everything is available on the web?

Tweetchat
I participated in the tweetchat yesterday. It was an interesting and quite fun experience. Could perhaps be used for creative discussions in a course. But many students probably don't have twitter. And can we require that they get it? It's after all a commercial application.

Natives, immigrants, residents and visitors
I think that the natives-immigrants typology may have taken the metaphor too far. The web consists of such a huge array of diverse phenomena, which makes it too complex for such a dichotomy. For instance, while my children are much better at using Snapchat and pokemon go than I am, I am far better at LinkedIn and ResearchGate (although not as good as I probably should be :)). The resident-visitor continuum seems better but may also suffer from over-simplification. I guess that one could be a resident in some aspect and in some media and a visitor in others.
